“The world stands aside for the man who knows where he’s going” Tom Peters

December 1 doesn’t only ring in the 25 Days of Christmas, but it also can be considered a business owner’s 25 Days of Planning!

Coaching Tip of the Day!

With most businesses ending their fiscal year at the end of December it is now time for them to close out 2009 with a bang and prepare to cheer in 2010. To do this most effectively there are a few critical things you should focus on doing over the next 25 or so days of December:

Close out 2009:

  • Evaluate your 2009 goals and objectives, and assess the progress that was made or the challenges that you encountered. Consider the good, bad and the ugly and make adjustments as needed for December and 2010.
    • Do not allow 2009 to pass without determining what worked, what did not, what new ideas there are, and more. It is better to be aware than to ignore!
  • Prepare yourself for the annual employee performance reviews.
    • To maximize the productivity of your team they need you to communicate with them regarding all aspects of their performance. Do NOT allow this critical process to be overlooked.
  • Record all transactions, expenses, revenue and more and get your books closed on time and completely.
  • Compile all reporting, receipts and other materials that will be needed for taxes
  • Talk to your bookkeeper and accountant now and discuss what they will need from you to properly prepare for fourth quarter taxes and year end.
  • Schedule time with your financial analyst, CFO or accountant and review your financials thoroughly so you can plan appropriately for 2010.
  • Complete your revenue and expense projections for 2010 and create that plan!

Prepare for 2010:      HAVE YOUR PLANS READY TO GO JANUARY 1!

  • Review 2009 actual expenses and planned budget and make adjustments to your 2010 plan
  • Analyze 2009 actual and planned revenues, then create or adjust 2010 projections and forecasts
  • Review your business plan
    • Evaluate your product and service mix along with your pricing and profitability model
    • Assess your target customer and market, adjust if needed
    • Refine or create your marketing and sales strategies based on 2009 and incorporate them into your 2010 plans
    • Has your overall vision or mission changed? (This is very possible if you are a new business or as a result of the current economic situation)
  • Outline your major Goals, Objectives and Projects for the year with assigned resources and deadlines
    • CRITICAL: I would never propose that a business does not have all of the items listed here prepared and in place for their business, but if there is 1 Must Have that has to be in place and ready to execute against come January 1 it would be a plan or roadmap of your yearly and monthly goals.
  • Communicate your Vision, Mission and Goals (from your business plan) to all employees, partners, vendors and customers.
    • Bring together your entire team and engage them in discussing 2010 plans.
    • Consider a Vendor/Partner and even Customer Appreciation Day and provide them insight to your 2010 plans
    • Keep in mind, the more everyone is aware of what you are trying to accomplish in your business, the more they will be on board to support you.

Get organized by closing out 2009 completely and then you can welcome in 2010 with a bang and have your plans in place so you know exactly where you are going in order for you, your business, and your team to accomplish the goals and dreams you have!!

Have a fabulous holiday  and planning season!

Coaching Tip of the Day - Its Black Friday - Spend, Save and Grow Your Business!

Friday, November 27th, 2009

cash-registerAttention all Business Owners:

Black Friday (and the holiday buying season) is not only good for businesses that will ring up a large percentage of their fourth quarter revenue in just a few days, it is also good for businesses that have their own buying they need to do.

Consider the discounts and savings that are being offered in store and online for such things as office supplies, laptops, printers, video cameras, phones, and much much more. And you could even find savings on the big ticket items your business needs; vehicles, equipment and more.

If you NEED (not WANT) these things for your business in order to grow and prosper in 2010, then this is the time that ‘you have to spend money to make money’. Not only will your business benefit but so will the businesses you are supporting. And just think you are helping the overall economy as well. A win win for everyone!

Coaching Tip of the Day!

Look over your budget to determine what you have available to spend, make a list of the MUST HAVE’s that are needed for your business, determine the ultimate price you are willing to pay, and then go and take advantage of Black Friday and the amazing deals that are sure to be offered this holiday season.

Have fun… not only could you give yourself a fun Christmas but your business will benefit as well.

Happy Black Friday!

Coaching Tip of the Day - “Get Out of your Own Way!”

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

chains Do you find yourself as a business owner getting in your own way of getting results due to constraints or negative belief systems you have of yourself and your abilities?

Do you find yourself procrastinating on doing things that you just do not want to do, or maybe you are not sure what you should be doing?

Are you letting the doldrums of the economy drag you down along with it, and you cannot find a way out?

Business Owners are simply human and therefore do bring along into their business all of their good and negatives beliefs in themselves, their abilities, the biases that they have gained over the years, and overall the constraints that often prevent them from accomplishing or exceeding their own goals.

I have witnessed that once they have identified and acknowledged the constraints that are holding them back, and they are able to find a solution to overcoming and eliminating those constraints, they see immediate and significant benefit and accomplishments.

Coaching Tip of the Day!

Take 15 minutes to sit down in a quiet place without distractions

Of that 15 minutes, take 5 minutes to write down on a piece of paper ALL of the constraints, barriers, and/or beliefs that you know are holding you down.

  • Do NOT think about or analyze your answers - there is no right or wrong.
  • Be honest with yourself, no one will be looking these over

Once you have the list take another 5 minutes to think of a solution or remedy for each of the constraints (even just put it into a positive belief) and make note of that next to each one.

Pick the most important 1 item that has the biggest impact to you and your business, crossing out the NEGATIVE belief or constraint. Focus on it for the last 5 minutes and visualize how you can begin to leverage the solution or remedy to completely eliminate that constraint.

For the next week really focus on that top Solution or Remedy and work to eliminate it from your belief system for good!  Watch your productivity and success FLY!!!

Good luck

Coaching Tip of the Day - Your Key for Success, Measure Your Results!

Monday, November 9th, 2009

measurement“The world stands aside for the man who knows where he’s going.” Tom Peters

Measuring the results of all of your business activities is key to understanding the effectiveness and value of the efforts, time and money you and your team are putting towards the business. If you are unaware or have not measured if:

  • the revenue you planned for the month or the number of new customers you wanted to obtain was achieved
  • the advertisement you placed in the local neighborhood magazine for $500.00 resulted in any calls
  • if the 10% promotional sale you held brought additional customers into your business
  • if the extra van, large scale printer or other equipment you purchased created additional business
  • if the salary or compensation you gave an employee resulted in the quality and level of work you expect from them

how do you know if  you are spending your time, effort, and money on the right people (including employees and target customers), in the right places, at the right time, for the right profit?

For your business to be successful and profitable you have to measure the activities that you are executing; everything from spend on equipment, advertising and marketing, networking, sales and promotions, salaries, and others.

Coaching Tip of the Day!

  • Identify 3 core measurements of success that support the activities you are executing in your business:
    • Activities could be: marketing, networking, promotions, associate performance reviews, advertising, etc.
    • Measures could be: # of calls, leads, appointments, new customers, visits, units purchased, revenue, etc.
  • Set your desired target results for the 3 measures that you chose
  • Track and measure the actual results of those 3 measurements
  • Analyze and address the efforts being made on each of those activities in order to ensure that you are getting the results you planned

Don’t be the business that fails or struggles to meet their goals because they failed to know what they wanted, and how they were going to get there. Take 10 minutes each day to review the key activities you and your team are working on, and be sure that you have established clear measurements for success for each of you. You will achieve greater results, faster if you do.

Have a fabulous day!
